‘Dear Bode, What the Fire Gave Me’, is a memoir by Martha Laraba Sambe.
This book is a series of personal letters written to various people in the author’s life, in which she unpacks various traumas and their resulting consequences on her life and relationships. Laraba seeks to make sense of her place in the world by tackling various defining issues including, personal and collective trauma, living as a queer woman in Nigeria, love, shame, resentment, and spiritual transcendence, etc. As she grapples with yet another traumatic incident in her life, she is finally faced with the choice to stay the same or rise above. What she chooses and how she arrives at this choice make this a compelling read for the radically honest and introspective. – bio from you Martha Laraba Sambe is a retired social justice warrior who now channels her energy into creating art and nurturing a return to spirit-centeredness as an antithesis to Western imperialist superstructures that have pillaged the Earth and its indigenous peoples. She is a researcher whose work has been published locally in Nigeria and internationally. Laraba has most recently supported the archival efforts of queer language in Nigeria through a collaboration with Obodo and Kampnagel on the visual arts and installation project Reimagining History: Towards A Decolonial Queer Vocabulary. She is also the creator of Spring of Wellness (SoW) a monthly newsletter and platform that weaves sacred practices from various Indigenous spiritual systems into practical tools for a more spirit-centered life. Laraba curates African Spiritualities, a platform providing in-depth analyses of various Indigenous African spiritual systems. An animist and advocate for right action, Laraba is a medium whose ability to foster meaningful dialogue has earned her recognition as a moderator and workshop facilitator.
